For me, the true strength of Victoria is its ability to grow and develop while still maintaining those aspects that make it unique. If you feel strongly about protecting the centerpiece of Victoria, write an email to councillors@victoria.ca and mayor@victoria.ca, and cc johnsonstreetbridge@victoria.ca. City of Victoria has extended the deadline for return of its mail-in surveys and comments to Tuesday, August 10, and any surveys or emails they receive in the last hours before a decision is made will matter the most.
Here are a few things to consider about the ongoing Johnson Street bridge debate, brought to my attention by Ross Crockford, Director of johnsonstreetbridge.org:
The federal government recently rehabilitated a bridge that’s similar to (but older than) ours in Kingston, for $3.1 million: http://johnsonstreetbridge.org/?p=1615
Just as the City’s estimates for repairing the bridge keep mysteriously escalating, so do the threats of full closures: http://johnsonstreetbridge.org/?p=1641
Portland’s recent festival celebrating its heritage bridges was a rousing success. Check out the videos: http://johnsonstreetbridge.org/?p=1594
